Dr. Clay,
If you have a moment, I wanted to ask you about the whey protein put out by a company called Designs For Health. They produce the whey from raw milk that comes from grass fed cows. Now this stuff can run between 58 and 69 bucks for 30 servings, so it is steep compared to many, but for those with wiggle room in the budget, it is still cheaper than buying junk at Starbucks.
Do you think being derived from raw milk from grassfed cows is a major benefit worth the investment or just a way to jack you up and take you for more money?
Good question, Jack.
For starters, I do feel Designs for Health makes some really good products. They’re a bit more slanted towards clinical nutrition than sports nutrition, much like Metagenics.
When it comes to paying more for something like a whey protein derived from grass-fed cows, I really think that’s more of a personal choice. Sort of like consuming only organic foods, even if a given food is typically pesticide free – like onions.
The reality is that there are no obvious problems with consuming whey derived from non-grass-fed cows. Food from grass-fed animals typically has a better fatty acid profile, but whey (at least an isolate) doesn’t have any fat. So there’s no obvious benefit.
Would I pay extra for whey derived from grass-fed cows? Nope.
I use CFM Whey Isolate from True Protein for my whey. http://www.drclay.com/nutrition/how-to-order-blended-protein-from-true-protein/
